In 1959, Boris Rychkov started to cultivate sambo at the Sverdlovsk Mining Institute (currently Ural State Mining University). Over its long history, sambo class at the Mining Institute has raised many worthy athletes. It was here where the champion of the RSFSR Valentin Afonin, champion of the RSFSR championships Ivan Berdov and more than 20 masters of sports were trained. Also, the future World Cup winner Sergey Danilik practiced his first sambo actions here at the Mining Institute under the coaching of Alexandr Yershov.

It did not take long for the first team victory of the Sverdlovsk students. In 1960, the student squad of our city under the leadership of coach Victor Avdeyev, became the champion of the RSFSR.

In 1963, sambo struck a chord with another high school. Sverdlovsk Polytechnic Institute and Sverdlovsk Mining Institute were joined by Sverdlovsk Law Institute (currently the Ural State Law University). Here the sambo class was headed by Igor Chemakin.

Then in 1956, Viktor Avdeyev and Boris Rychkov were invited to work at UPI. They extended student classes to “professional” trainings. However, the word "professional" was preferably excluded from the vocabulary of those years...
