He began practicing sambo in Verkhnyaya Pyshma at the age of 12 with Gennady Oleynikov. He entered the Sverdlovsk Engineering and Pedagogical Institute, began training in "Uralmash" sports club with Alexander Kozlov, was a multiple prize winner and champion of the Sverdlovsk region, winner of the "Ural" area tournament for youth, champion and prize winner of the sports community "Trud".

Since 2000 he is a coach at UMMC Sambo Club (Verkhnyaya Pyshma). He raised more than a dozen masters of sports, including the winner of the championship of Russia among schoolchildren Denis Motovilov, silver medalist Russian championship Vagram Sargsyan, the winner of the championship of the Asian part of Russia and the winner of the championship of Asia Andrey Tashmurzin and others.

Among the athletes with visual disabilities he trained two Honored Masters of Sports, multiple medalists and champions of Russia, Europe and the world, Paralympic medalists Alexandra Vlasova, Yekaterina Buzmakova, International Master of Sport, European championship medalist Natalia Khudoneyeva. Alexander Tolmachev is the Honored Worker of the All Russia Society of the Blind.

He is also a coach of "Lider" school (Verkhnyaya Pyshma).

Alexander Tolmachyov was repeatedly awarded certificates and letters of gratitude, including a letter of gratituade from the President of the Russian Federation.
