Biography

Aymergen Atkunov first came into the limelight in 2010, when he became the silver medalist at the Russian Championship, and then won the silver at his debut European Championship. Then his sporting carrier came to a brief halt. However, as it turned out, Aymergen had been saving his strength to fire back in 2013, when he had a glorious season by winning one –by- one the Russian Championship gold, the World University Games gold and the World Championship bronze. In 2014, Atkunov did not rest on his oars and repeated the champion, followed by the World Championship silver. In 2015, he became the Russian strongest athlete for the third time and won the opening European Games in Baku. Being well-balanced and cool-headed, he looked very competent tactically on the mat. He also had substantial knowledge and deep insight in wrestling. Unfortunately, he was retired from the sport in 2020 due to numerous injuries. Perhaps, it had occurred a little earlier than his fans wished. He is now a coach in his native republic.
