All-Russian Sambo Day

On November 16, 2022, Verkhnyaya Pyshma hosted a tournament of the Sverdlovsk region among cadets (M&W 14-16 years old) as part of the project “Sport is the norm”. The event marks the All-Russian Sambo Day.

The Day of Sambo is celebrated on November 16. On this day in 1938, the USSR Sports Committee included sambo in sports to be promoted in the Soviet Union.  In 2008, as our sport turned 70 years, All-Russian Sambo Day was marked for a first time. Since then, November 16 has been the occasion to show the best sambo practices since its formation. In 2009, the All-Russian Sambo Federation along with Russia’s Ministry of Sports organized the first-ever event involving 50 towns and cities. Of all sambo events, it is now the biggest sporting one in terms of contenders and geography. Not only is it a mass participation sporting event, but it also creates a social impact by getting children and teenagers involved in sport.

300 boys and girls from 22 towns and cities of the Sverdlovsk region attended the tournament, held in the Palace of Sambo and Martial Arts, to vie in 10 weight categories and to show again sambo grows individuals with strength of character, stamina and endurance!

“All-Russian Sambo Day is not merely a tournament for tournament’s sake. It gives a chance to work with the country as one team. Events of the kind have no losers; it is the taking part that counts. Boys and girls win medals and certificates of achievement. Sports results do not matter. The event helps feel involvement in sambo, brings a positive energy into children’s lives, gets them take trainings seriously. Children seek to join the national team. All-Russian Sambo Day allows them to see themselves in sambo”, says Sergey Eliseev, President of the All-Russian Sambo Federation.
